Role of Private Companies in Aircraft Manufacturing
Currently, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is the primary manufacturer of military aircraft in India. However, production delays and supply chain challenges have hindered the timely delivery of new fighter jets. By allowing private firms to participate, the government aims to increase production speed and efficiency.
The Indian Air Force Chief has suggested that India should aim to produce 35 to 40 fighter jets annually to meet its defense requirements. HAL, despite its constraints, is expected to deliver up to 24 aircraft in the upcoming fiscal year.
Strengthening India's Defense Readiness
This initiative is part of India's broader strategy to modernize its defense forces and achieve self-reliance in military manufacturing. By leveraging private sector expertise, the country hopes to enhance production capacity, reduce dependence on foreign imports, and ensure a stronger, more capable Air Force.
