Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a warning to India, stating that he would “significantly” raise tariffs on Indian goods if the country continues to buy oil from Russia. This statement, made during his campaign speeches, reflects Trump’s ongoing push for tougher trade policies under his “America First” approach.
Trump argued that India enjoys substantial trade benefits with the U.S. while maintaining close economic ties with Russia, which he considers unacceptable. He emphasized that no country should “take advantage” of American trade while supporting U.S. adversaries.
India, one of the largest buyers of Russian crude, has not yet officially responded to Trump’s comments. Analysts suggest that if such tariffs are implemented, key Indian export sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT services could face major challenges.
While many view Trump’s remarks as part of his election campaign rhetoric, they put India in a delicate position as it works to balance its relationships with both Washington and Moscow.
