Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have once again engaged in high-level discussions, marking another step in their growing diplomatic engagement. The two leaders first made headlines when Modi visited Kyiv in August 2024 — the first-ever trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since the nations established diplomatic relations in 1992.
During that historic visit, Modi paid tribute to Ukrainian children who had lost their lives in the war, followed by a warm handshake and hug with Zelenskyy. The talks centered on India’s commitment to peace, humanitarian assistance, and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty. Modi clarified that India’s neutrality in the Russia–Ukraine conflict does not equate to indifference, but rather reflects a balanced approach focused on dialogue over warfare.
Zelenskyy called the meeting “historic” and expressed gratitude for India’s support, also inviting further cooperation. The Ukrainian leader welcomed India’s ideas for peace and signaled readiness for deeper engagement.
This diplomatic outreach came shortly after Modi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which drew mixed global reactions. Yet, Modi’s approach to engage both Kyiv and Moscow underlines India’s careful balancing act on the world stage.
On August 11, 2025, the two leaders spoke over the phone to discuss energy cooperation, including oil trade, and agreed to meet in person soon — a sign that their dialogue is far from over.
