Bihar Voter List Update Sparks Political Uproar

The Election Commission of India has launched a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, scheduled from June 24 to July 25, 2025. This revision aims to clean up the electoral rolls by verifying voters' details and removing outdated or incorrect entries. However, it has led to a political storm just months before the state assembly elections.

Why the Controversy?

While the Election Commission claims the revision is standard procedure and will ensure fair elections, opposition parties are calling it unfair and ill-timed. They argue the process is too rushed and could end up removing genuine voters—especially since some commonly used documents like Aadhaar or MNREGA cards are not being accepted.

Legal and Political Pushback

Major opposition groups like RJD, Congress, CPI, and others have moved to the Supreme Court, requesting a halt to the revision until after the elections. They fear this could affect voter turnout and harm democratic rights. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case on July 10, though it hasn’t paused the process yet.

EC’s Clarification

To address concerns, the EC has said people can submit forms without documents, which can be added later—up to July 25. Over 87% of households have already received the forms through booth-level officers.

What’s Next?

A decision from the top court will decide whether this revision continues or gets delayed. Until then, political tension in Bihar is likely to grow, with both sides accusing each other of trying to manipulate the voter base ahead of the 2025 elections.
