Bihar to Provide 125 Units of Free Electricity from August

Starting August 1, 2025, the Bihar government will provide 125 units of electricity free every month to domestic consumers. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced this decision, saying it will benefit nearly 1.67 crore households across the state.

Who Will Benefit?

This scheme applies to all homes using up to 125 units per month. According to officials, most rural and low‑consumption households fall in this category, meaning they won’t have to pay anything for their electricity if they stay within this limit.

How Will It Work?

  • Smart prepaid meter users will automatically get the first 125 units free every month. They won’t need to recharge unless their usage exceeds this limit.

  • Postpaid consumers will also see their first 125 units adjusted in their bills at zero cost. Any extra consumption will be charged as per the existing subsidised rates.

Government’s Plan

The scheme is expected to cost the state around ₹3,375 crore this year, taking the total annual electricity subsidy close to ₹19,000 crore. Along with this relief, the government also aims to expand solar power in Bihar, targeting 10,000 MW rooftop solar installations in the next three years. Poor families under the Kutir Jyoti scheme will get free rooftop solar panels, while others will receive financial support for installation.

Boosting Power Supply

Bihar’s electricity capacity is also increasing. NTPC’s Barh Super Thermal Power Project (3,300 MW) became fully operational on July 1, 2025, and the Buxar Thermal Power Plant (1,320 MW) is expected to start soon. These projects will improve supply stability in the state.

Why Now?

The announcement comes just months before the Bihar Assembly elections, leading to criticism from the opposition, which has called it a “poll promise in disguise.” However, the government insists that this step is part of its larger plan to make electricity more affordable and encourage clean energy use.

In short: From August 2025, Bihar households using up to 125 units of electricity will not have to pay for it. This move aims to provide financial relief, boost solar energy adoption, and strengthen the state’s power infrastructure.
