Chopra accomplished the feat on his third attempt of the evening. His throw was met with roaring applause from the crowd and celebrated across the Indian sports community. Prior to this, his personal best was 89.94 meters, just shy of the 90m milestone.

Despite the remarkable achievement, Neeraj finished second in the competition, narrowly edged out by Germany’s Julian Weber, who registered a winning throw of 91.06 meters.

Chopra’s throw series for the evening included:

  • 88.44m (1st attempt)

  • Foul (2nd)

  • 90.23m (3rd)

  • 80.56m (4th)

  • Foul (5th)

  • 88.20m (6th)

After the event, Chopra said he was proud but hungry for more. “I knew the 90m mark would come—it was just a matter of time. I believe I can throw even farther,” he told reporters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders congratulated him on the historic throw, calling it a proud moment for India and a major boost to Indian athletics on the global stage.

Neeraj’s performance puts him in the elite club of javelin throwers worldwide who have breached the 90-meter barrier—an achievement long considered a benchmark of greatness in the sport.
