Mumbai Indians (MI) registered their first victory of the IPL 2025 season in style, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by eight wickets at the Wankhede Stadium. The match saw MI’s bowlers decimate KKR’s batting lineup before their batters chased down the target with ease.
KKR’s Struggles with the Bat
MI won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that proved effective immediately. Trent Boult gave MI the perfect start by dismissing Sunil Narine for a duck in the very first over. Deepak Chahar followed up with another wicket, removing Quinton de Kock in the next over, leaving KKR in deep trouble at 2/2.
Ajinkya Rahane and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi tried to bring some stability, but their partnership did not last long. Debutant Ashwani Kumar struck on his very first ball, dismissing Rahane with the help of a juggling catch by Tilak Varma. Chahar then sent Venkatesh Iyer back to the pavilion, reducing KKR to 41/4 at the end of the powerplay.
Raghuvanshi, who looked like KKR’s best hope, fell to a sharp bouncer from Hardik Pandya. Ashwani Kumar then took center stage, dismissing Rinku Singh and Manish Pandey in quick succession before rattling Andre Russell’s stumps. With wickets falling consistently, KKR failed to put up a competitive score and were bowled out for a mere 116 in 16.2 overs. Ashwani Kumar stole the show with a dream debut, finishing with figures of 4/24.
MI’s Confident Chase Led by Rickelton
Chasing a target of 117, MI’s openers Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma built a solid foundation. Despite some early movement from KKR’s pacers, the duo added 46 runs for the first wicket. Andre Russell gave KKR their first breakthrough by dismissing Rohit, but that did little to slow MI down.
Rickelton continued to dominate and reached his maiden IPL fifty in style, smashing consecutive sixes off Sunil Narine. MI reached 89/1 in 10 overs, needing just 28 runs from 60 balls. Though Russell managed to pick up another wicket, removing Will Jacks, Suryakumar Yadav ensured there were no further hiccups. His quickfire 27 off just nine balls, including a stunning six over the keeper’s head, sealed the victory for MI as they chased down the target in just 12.5 overs.
Impact on the Standings
With this emphatic win, MI not only secured their first points of the season but also boosted their Net Run Rate, climbing from the bottom of the table to sixth place. On the other hand, KKR’s poor performance saw them drop to the last position.
This match highlighted MI’s strengths, with their bowlers setting up the win and their batters finishing it off in dominant fashion. With this momentum, MI will look to continue their winning run in the tournament.
