Murati has gathered a team of around 30 researchers and engineers. Among them are John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI, who will serve as the head of research, and Barret Zoph, another AI expert, who will take on the role of Chief Technology Officer. The startup has also brought in talent from other leading AI companies.

In a blog post, Murati highlighted the need for better understanding and accessibility in AI. She pointed out that while AI is advancing quickly, there is still a gap in scientific comprehension and public awareness of how these systems work.

Thinking Machines Lab aims to bridge this gap by openly publishing research and making AI knowledge more accessible. The company’s mission is to help individuals and organizations tailor AI systems to their specific needs.

Murati left OpenAI in September 2024 to pursue new projects. Her leadership in this new venture reflects her commitment to advancing AI in a way that benefits both businesses and society.

With AI becoming increasingly integrated into various industries, the demand for transparent and adaptable systems is greater than ever. Thinking Machines Lab is set to play a key role in shaping the future of AI innovation.
